The devil was a powerful, high ranking angel in Heaven until he decided he wanted to be like God, (Ezekiel 28:14-15). Because of this, he was thrown out of Heaven to the earth along with 1/3 of the angels and there he remains. He is causing problems in the earth with his demonic army and he wants to destroy everyone especially those who have accepted Jesus as their savior. He hates God’s children and is doing all he can to destroy them. But, he can only hurt certain people.
“Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour,” 1 Peter 5:8. Do you see that? The devil is walking around looking for someone to attack which means he can’t just attack anyone. So who is protected and who’s vulnerable? Psalm 91 has the answer: “If you make the Most High your dwelling, even the LORD, who is my refuge then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.” Verses 9-10. We have to stay under the wings of the Almighty, close to the Good Shepherd, in the arms of His angels. When we wander or willfully leave His side, that’s when we may be devoured. Now you know.
