My wife sent me to the store recently to get a certain grocery item. I had it in my mind that it came in a blue box and that’s what I was looking for, but couldn’t find it. As frustration began to mount, I thought, “Maybe it’s not in a blue box. Focus on the name.” Well, right there it was, in a red box! I had focused so much on blue that I missed what I was looking for, the real thing.
Could it be, in the same way, we’re looking for God in the bonfire but He’s in the candle? We’re listening for the shout and He’s speaking in a whistper? Or, we’re looking for God in the world and He’s in our hearts? It happened to Elijah too. “And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 1 Kings 19:11-12“
I try to see God in many things; nature, music, the Word, people. He reveals himself in many ways but it’s not usually the way we’re expecting. Look in some different places and see what you find.
Have a blessed day!
