I came upon a blog by a Christian conservative brother Gill Rapoza, VERITAS VOS LIBERABIT, who had posted the last seven things Jesus said while on the cross. I read the scriptures, which I had done numerous times before, but this time saw some things I hadn’t noticed before, (revelations). Mr. Rapoza gave his commentary on the verses but I didn’t read them yet because I wanted to give what God brings to my mind about them.
1 & 2. “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” Luke 23:24. Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” Luke 23:34. Even in His agony and pain, Jesus was still having compassion on God’s creation; one who accepted Him and even those who were killing Him.
3. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. John 19:26-27. I think Jesus was reminding His Mom that He would not be there physically to take care of her but He was really saying, “Mom, don’t worry. John will take care of you and I’ll be very near.”
4. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Matthew 27:46. Jesus knew that His Father had always been with Him but at this moment, in this critical time for all humanity, God must have turned His back and Jesus felt it. They both did it for us!
5. After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” John 19:28. Jesus knew the scriptures and that He was supposed to be given vinegar, so He asked for something.
6 & 7. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. John 19:30. We are spirit, soul and body. When Jesus gave up His Spirit, (it was not taken from Him), His body could not live much longer. And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’” Having said this, He breathed His last. Luke 23:46. God’s plan to save mankind was accomplished with the supreme sacrifice made by our Savior and Lord. It was tragic and sad! BUT…we know what happened three days later! HE IS RISEN AND ALIVE!
