The coach of a sports team; ahh…sometimes we love him, or we hate him, and sometimes we wonder, “What is he thinking!!!”. Our relationship with the coach is based on whether we’re on the team or just a fan and our opinion of him may change because of what he does. But a good coach has the best interests of his players and the team at heart. As he leads and directs, he may require his players to go through some terribly hard training and may not let certain ones play because they’re not ready yet. The good coach would never let you come to practice whenever you wanted to or sit on the sidelines reading the paper and say, “Oh, do whatever you want in practice today, I don’t care.” The good coach does care, he’s in charge and if you want to be successful, you do what he says.
God is our Heavenly Coach; we always love Him, never hate Him, but sometimes wonder what He’s doing, why does it hurt, and why is it taking so long. Since we’re on the team, our relationship with the Coach is intimate; we’re with Him closely every day and we know by looking at His record that He has never lost and, in fact, this team has already won, “Dear children, you belong to God. So you have won the victory over these people, because, “the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4). God loves us so much and wants us to receive the reward that He commands us to go through some rough training and, if you’re at the practice, He won’t let you slide with mediocre performance. He won’t let you, “do your own thing”, if you’re with Him. God the Coach loves us, He’s in charge and if we want to be successful and please Him, we’ll do what He says. “What do you want me to do now Coach?”
