“For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing
soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12). The Word of God. In my church, we’ve been reading God’s Word together since January and the more of the Word we know and have in our spirits, the more effective we’ll be as Christians. You can actually tell how much Word is in the hearts of people by listening to them talk. “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45). Pay attention to what others say and listen to the words that come out of YOUR mouth.
In Acts 20-24 this week, the apostle Paul had traveled all over his world preaching the Good News of Jesus and faced opposition everywhere he went from the Jewish leaders who said he was preaching heresy. Yet he continued. The Word of God, the story of Jesus, was important to him. It should be important to us as well. There is power in the words of God. “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs18:21). Jesus only spoke the words He heard the Father speak and encouraged His followers, (and us), to do the same. Are we speaking life or death? How can we know what to speak in a tight situation unless the words are already in our hearts? Most of the time, we won’t have time to go look up the answer. This is one of the reasons we are encouraging our church to read their chapters daily.
Have you heard people say, “I’m taking a cold.”, “I’ll never get over this.”, “This problem is going to kill me.” Or “I missed it and may as well give up.”? Those are all defeatist words and need to be changed to words that match God’s Word. We can REMARK about our situation or we can REMAKE it by the words we choose. Select your words carefully and get into your Bible to see what you’re supposed to say. Jesus beat the devil by saying, “IT IS WRITTEN…”, we can too.
