In Mark 12: 1-9 we read about the Parable of the Tenants. A man planted a vineyard and rented it to some farmers to take care of. When it was time for the harvest, he sent several servants to collect some of the fruit, but the tenants beat them, threw them out of the vineyard and even killed some. The owner finally sent his son hoping they would respect him, but they did the same to him, they killed him. The tenants were then killed by the owner and the vineyard was rented to others. This made me think of a couple of original tenants, Adam and Eve, who God told, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” (Genesis 1:29). Adam and Eve were the landlords of God’s creation. They didn’t fulfill their rental agreement and were banished from the Garden. So, what about us?
Think of all the “things” we have. “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him.” (Psalm 24:1, NLT). You could say that we are the landlords of all that we have, all that God has given us to manage. What are we doing with it? And, what if God sends His Son, Jesus to our door? “Behold, I stand at the door and knock;” (Revelation 3:20), what are we going to do? Will we tell Him to wait a minute so we can go clean, change the channel or hide stuff? Will we have one room that is ready for Him, but He’s limited to that room only? He may be coming to check on what He has “leased” to us, (of course, He already knows). It would be great if we could open the door and invite Him in, have a meal with Him and sit and talk for a while. Then maybe we could go outside for a walk and enjoy His creation; the plants, animals, the weather, all that He has created and “leased” to us. And He would tell us, “Look at all these wonderful things I’ve given you, aren’t they great?” “But remember, you’re much more valuable to Me that all this.” (Matthew 6:26).
Let’s think about what all God has given us to manage, what we’re doing with it and how much we’re giving back to Him. We’re the landlords of what we’ve been given. But remember, we have a mansion awaiting us in our eternal home where God is the Lord of that Land. Hallelujah!
