While driving the other day, I saw where an old house had been torn down and all that was left was the foundation and the concrete floor. I thought, “What good is a foundation unless a house is built on it?” Well, that started me thinking, (Revelations From the Road). A firm foundation is the FIRST step in the process of God’s plan for our lives. There are many things that can be built upon that foundation. Getting saved gets us on the foundation and will get us to Heaven but God’s plan involves much more. Can you see someone getting a foundation laid and a floor poured then getting a folding chair, setting it on the foundation, sitting down in it and saying, “Okay, I’m done.” You might think their elevator doesn’t go to the top floor!
So, thinking about this Firm Foundation, let’s look at a few scriptures that relate.
“Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.” (Ephesians 2:20 NLT). Thinking of the concrete foundation, when we get saved, we step up on the Cornerstone of Jesus which puts us solidly on the whole foundation.
“And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid.” (Ezra 3:11 NIV). Again, when we get saved, there goes up a shout of praise in Heaven, (Luke 15:10), and among the Church because a new foundation has been established on which the new Christian can build.
And, God will say, “OK, you’ve taken the first step and you’ve made a start so let’s move on with the building project.” “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV). God has a blueprint, let’s work with Him on it.
But there are those who think that building on a foundation of money, fame, accomplishments, or education will ultimately support them. “…a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7:26-27 NIV). This may work for awhile but, in the end, it will all come crashing down.
Then there are those who start out on the firm foundation but are “carried away”, tempted and deceived until they’ve damaged their firm footing. “You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability.” (2 Peter 3:17 ESV).
And finally, we are established on our Firm Foundation and we bring others onto it teaching them The Way so they can branch out, step up on their Cornerstone and establish their own Firm Foundation. “By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care.” (1 Corinthians 3:10 NIV). Our family, friends, and those in our circle of influence need to know of our relationship with the Master Builder. We can give them a good recommendation.
