We read of many instances in the Bible where people were healed by Jesus. People were coming to Him everywhere He went to be healed and I have found at least ten verses that say He healed them all. But as I have read the many occasions when people were healed by Jesus, I’ve noticed it happened in different ways. Let’s look at these.
It seems the most common way Jesus healed people was to lay His hands on them or touch them. There are 16 verses that depict someone being healed or raised from death by the touch of Jesus. Here’s one: “And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.”(Matthew 8:3). “After the sun had set, people with all kinds of diseases were brought to Jesus. He put his hands on each one of them and healed them.” (Luke 4:40). A touch from Jesus had great power…and it still does.
Another way people were healed by Jesus was simply by His words. All He had to do was give a command and people were healed and freed of demonic possession. Ten lepers cried out to Jesus to heal them and He said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests. And as they went, they were cleansed.” (Luke 17:14). Of course, they had to believe. And there was the boy who was possessed by demons and Jesus spoke these words, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” (Mark 9:25). The boy was healed! Even Jesus’ thoughts healed people. The centurion’s servant was an example: “And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.” (Luke 7:10). Jesus didn’t say anything but marveled to the crowd about the centurion’s faith.
Then there were people who reached out and touched Jesus for their healing. The woman with the issue of blood who had been sick for twelve years: “She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased.” (Luke 8:44). And there were many others: “And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all.” (Luke 6:19). Wherever Jesus went, the power to heal was present. This was evidenced by the occasion when the man was healed who had been brought by friends and lowered through the roof. “And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.” (Luke 5:17). This was another time when Jesus only spoke to the man, “Get up!”
So we see that Jesus touched, spoke, thought and was touched which brought about healing to those in need. Wouldn’t it be great if we could see more of this in our world today? Well, Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father” (John 14:12). As the father of the possessed boy stated, “I believe, help my unbelief.” (Mark 9:24).
