“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
As I look back at some of the posts I’ve written recently, I see that God is reminding me and us of a theme; we’ve got to have a plan, work the plan and realize it will take time. Today, I got another installment on the topic.
I was at a store and saw some people who were really overweight and out of shape. Now, I don’t know their situation but, as a former health and physical education teacher and coach, I know how someone could let themselves get that way. I am not where I need to be physically either and I said to the Lord, “I don’t want to be like that.” Immediately, I heard in my Spirit, “Well, you know what you should be doing and you’re not doing it.” I had to agree. I have the knowledge, the equipment and the time but I have procrastinated. I seem to be a pro at that! I’ve got to have a game plan.
Then, as always, I began to see a Spiritual lesson here. God has given us all we need to be strong and in shape Spiritually but, many times, we are not using it. The Bible is full of steps, processes and plans to lead us to fulfill or mission but, many times, we want to do it our way or not at all. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11). God has a game plan for us.
I thought one time of an overweight guy with a bag of chips sitting on his couch praying, “God, please help me get in shape and lose weight.” To which God answers, “Okay, I will but you have to get off the couch, put away the chips and let’s get to work!” God could say the Word and we would be in perfect shape physically and spiritually but He doesn’t work that way. And what if a young athlete comes to the coach and says, “Coach, I want to be on the first team.” To which the coach would say, “Okay, you can but it’s going to take a lot of work.” He could put the weak, unskilled kid on the first team but you know how that would go. The coach has a plan.
If we want to be the best, most useful Christian servant we can be, we must follow God’s game plan. And I’ll tell you it’s going to be hard, it will take time and you’ll make mistakes but the rewards will be out of this world. And you’ll have many blessings in this world too. We’ve got to sign up for the team, (get saved), report for training, (Bible study, prayer, attend church, fellowship with team members), and do our best to follow God’s game plan. And when we fail, get up and go back at it. Keep working on the plan. God is with us all the way.
Revelation 21:4 says that, in Heaven, “…There will be no more…sorrow or crying or pain,” Now since this is true, I’m thinking that when we get to Heaven, God will not let us know what we could have done if we’d followed His plan perfectly. We fail many times along the way. If we could see what we could have done, I think it would make us sad. So, let’s do our best to learn, follow and work hard at accomplishing God’s game plan for us. Are you ready?
