As we are in the “gift-giving” time of the year, Christmas, I want to remind us about an outstanding Gift we have all been offered. You know which gift I mean, the Gift of Jesus. The reason for the season is the Gift God sent us over 2000 years ago. But I want us to notice three things about a gift that we might not have thought about.
- You cannot earn a gift. A gift is given from someone who does not put any restrictions or qualifications on the person they want to give it to. A gift is given no matter what. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God,not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
- You don’t have to deserve a gift. Maybe you really don’t deserve the gift at all but the person giving it is doing so in love. They want to offer it to you whether you are deserving or not. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16).
- And finally, when a gift is offered to you, You must receive it. You can refuse the gift or maybe take it but not open it. But for the gift to be realized in your life, you must accept it, open it and take advantage of the purpose of the gift. “He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:11-12).
This Christmas, we celebrate the Gift God sent to us on that dark night in Bethlehem. It was a Gift that never expires, can be accepted at any time and once opened, will last for eternity. This Gift is not only available at Christmas but at any time during the year. I pray that you have accepted it. It’s free and the joy you will receive from it are out of this world!
