The online ad says, “Drink this before bedtime and lose you belly fat in one week.” Or, “Call this number and get all these benefits…FREE!” Yeah right. Don’t “Click here” or “Call right away”. Some things we just know are too good to be true…or we should know. I read of a person who was getting these emails from a poor Christian woman in Nigeria whose husband was imprisoned and she needed financial help to bribe the officials to free him. Someone asked them, “You didn’t send them any money, did you?” Over the course of two months, they had sent $1200 to this “poor Christian woman”. Who ya gonna believe? As Christians, we are called to give to those in need but the devil will present us with false options that we have to be careful about. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” (1 Peter 5:8). We have to know what is true.
The Word of God is full of truth and that’s the truth we have to know and live by. We can’t believe everything we read on the Internet, or from college professors, politicians, salesmen, pharmaceutical companies or even preachers. Yes, there are truthful people in all these areas but we must know what is true to be discerning. And to know what truth is, we must know the Bible. Reading our Bibles regularly, listening to Biblical preaching, and having trusted family and friends to reach out to are critical for us to live in truth. Jehoshaphat told the people, “Believe in the LORD your God, and you will be able to stand firm.” (2 Chronicles 20:20). Don’t believe the circumstances, don’t believe your past, don’t believe what people think, don’t believe what “could” happen! Believe God’s Word! And what is God’s Word for you? Well, that’s where we have to prepare, read, study, listen in order to know and believe. And, God is always right there with you so you can ask Him what to do. We might say, “It’s too hard to believe.” Did you believe this: “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.”? (Acts 16:31).
So, let’s be very discerning as to what confronts us and what we believe. Get to work, be ready.
