As I was thinking about everything leading up to Easter Sunday and the sacrifice Jesus made for us, I got a revelation about sacrifices. In the Old Testament, unblemished animals were sacrificed for the sins of the people. “And he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and kill the sin offering in the place of burnt offering.” (Leviticus 4:29). This sacrifice meant the death of the animal, a dead sacrifice, the animal would be of no more use. Bear with me here.
In Romans 12:1 it says, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” We, as children of God, should offer ourselves as unblemished LIVING sacrifices. Of course, we are blemished by living in a sinful world until we repent and ask forgiveness for our sins after which God will cleanse us to be unblemished, (1 John 1:9). The difference here is that when we offer ourselves as living sacrifices, we can go on to be of use to God unlike the dead sacrificial animals of old. We sacrifice ourselves and our will to God and submit to His will for us. He has more for us to do.
But then, there’s a third part of this revelation…JESUS. He sacrificed Himself as the Lamb of God. He was killed for our sins. “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). Jesus died for us…He was a dead sacrifice, the Lamb of God. But then, on the third day, He passed from death to life, He arose from the dead sacrifice to a living sacrifice demonstrating to us that we too can be living sacrifices! That, my friends, is the reason for Easter! Death to life. We need to offer ourselves daily as LIVING sacrifices. If you haven’t accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, do it today. Have a Happy and blessed Easter!
