“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:18)
God gave us our eyes for a purpose, to see. But what are we looking at? The enemy will throw all kinds of things before us to distract us from seeing what’s up ahead in our life’s walk. I have“seen” many things about the Path of Life; how we’re on the Path toward our God-given mission but distractions will appear along the side to try to get us off the Path. Have you ever taken the wrong exit or made the wrong turn while traveling? Me too. We have to focus and not allow ourselves to be led in the wrong direction.
Being a former track coach, I can see this as a runner striving for the finish line and the prize but, as they pass the bleachers, they notice their boyfriend or girlfriend in the stands and slow down to wave at them. They failed to focus and lost the race. We must focus. “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14).
Another thing I’ve learned lately about focus relates to light and darkness. If we’re in the dark, it’s hard or impossible to focus; we can’t “see” where we’re going and are likely to stumble, (Psalm 56:13). But if we are in the Light, God is there because He is the Light. I’ve been battling vertigo recently and have found that if I focus straight ahead where I’m going, I can do alright. But if I move my head to look to the right or left, I may lose my balence and possibly stumble. I must focus.
So, as we travel the Path of Life, don’t pay any attention to those enticing road signs trying to get us to exit. And, watch where you’re going; focus straight ahead so you won’t stumble over distractions on the Path. There will be times when we can’t “see” what’s up ahead. God will always be with us as we travel and sometimes we’ll hear, “Hey, I know you can’t “see” where I’m taking you but just focus on me and I’ll get you through.” Pay attention to the Voice of Truth. Focus.
