“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
God loves us all! In Mark 5, we read about two very different people who approached Jesus with a need. One was an important leader in the synagogue, Jairus, and the other was an unnamed woman of no significance. Knowing how the religious leaders felt about Jesus, it seems strange that Jairus “fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him,” (v.22-23) to come and heal his daughter. But Jesus, who loves everyone, went with him. “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8). Jairus drew near.
Then there was this woman who snuck out of her house because, according to Jewish law, she was “unclean” with a bleeding disorder she’d had for twelve years. She heard Jesus was nearby and in desperation, she drew near to Him. She thought, “If I just touch his garment, I will be healed.” (v.28). She went in faith. People were all around Jesus, brushing up against Him, but He said, “Who touched my clothes?” (v.30). She had touched Him differently and He knew it! Jesus was willing to pause on His way to Jairus’ house to meet the need of this nobody woman. He loved her. And…He knew her and all about Jairus’ daughter too. Jesus was in control. As the story goes, Jesus healed the woman because of her faith, (v.34), and He continued on with Jairus.
Then some came from Jairus’ house announcing that his daughter was dead and not to “bother the Teacher anymore.” (v.35). But Jesus looked straight at Jairus and said, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” (v.36). Jesus loved Jairus and his daughter and He was in control. He went to the house and got her up.
I want us to think: In prayer, when we go to Jesus, when we draw near to God, how are we going? Expecting something, going in faith, knowing His promises, reaching out in humbleness? What’s our attitude? It makes a difference. It doesn’t matter if we’re rich or poor, important or unknown; Jesus loves us all and wants to meet our needs. He died for us!
