Several things have “come to me” over the years that make me more aware of how to live the Christian life. As we enter into a new year, let’s pay attention.
Don’t go there! A person goes down a street and accidentally falls into a construction hole. The lesson here? Choose a different path the next time; don’t keep going down the same street.
Don’t look! Someone may be questioned about why they looked at something they shouldn’t be looking at and they reply, “Well, it just caught my eye.” However, before “it” can catch your eye, you have to cast your eye upon it!
Don’t think that! Sin, most of the time, starts in the mind. “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.” (Matthew 15:19)
“But Jesus knew their thoughts. (Luke 6:8). Think only on good things, (Philippians 4:8).
Don’t do that! “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, (Colossians 3:23). If it’s something you’re doing for your own glory or for the wrong reasons…don’t do it!
Don’t listen to that! We may hear something that sounds good but actually is a temptation. ”Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2)
Don’t say that! Be careful with what comes out of your mouth. The Bible says, “Words can bring death or life! Talk too much, and you will eat everything you say.” (Proverbs 18:21 CEV). “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”Ephesians 4:29).
One checklist I use in my daily interactions is this: “Lord today, may everything I think, say, do, feel and show be pleasing to You.” We want to be shining lights for the Lord. As we soon begin our new year, may we think on these things and resolve to be pleasing to our God.
