“Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” (Proverbs 31:31)
Mother’s Day was last week but I wanted to remind us that we should honor our mothers beyond that special day. So here are some thoughts about our mothers.
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” Genesis 2:18)
Eve was the first woman, the first wife, and the first mother. Though she was not without her flaws and failings, she also experienced many firsts, both joyful and heartbreaking: She was the first to experience childbirth, the first to see her children at odds with one another, the first to experience the grief of losing a child.
“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!” (Luke 1:41-42)
Elizabeth and her husband, Zechariah, were both advanced in age but the angel Gabriel told Zechariah they would soon have a child. God had a plan.
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.” (Luke 1:38)
Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the most beloved and revered woman in the Bible. She didn’t understand what was told to her but she believed and the rest is history.
“M – O – T – H – E – R
by Howard Johnson
“M” is for the million things she gave me,
“O” means only that she’s growing old,
“T” is for the tears she shed to save me,
“H” is for her heart of purest gold,
“E” is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
“R” means right, and right she’ll always be,
Put them all together, they spell “MOTHER,” A word that means the world to me.
