“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.” (Acts 2:1)
If you don’t know what happened next, read the rest of Acts 2. Because they were all together “in one accord’, great things happened. We, as the church, being together with the same mission can cause great things to happen as well.
God gave Joshua instructions on how to defeat the walled city of Jericho. “When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.” (Joshua 6:20). The army was “in one accord” when they shouted as God commanded and they defeated Jericho.
When the Ark of the Covenant was brought to the Temple in Jerusalem, “when the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord, the house of the Lord, was filled with a cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of God.” (2 Chronicles 5:13-14).
Driving to Big Stone Gap when I worked down there, I noticed the beautiful valley and this vision came to me: I could see the prayers of the people in the valley going up to God as shafts of light. Different prayers were going up in all directions. But when the people were, “in one accord”, praying the same prayer, their light shafts came to one point in the sky and exploded with God’s answer which showered down on the valley.
In 1997, a group of us men went to Washington D.C. for a Promise Keepers gathering where thousands of men gathered on the National Mall. At one point, the leader made a request saying, “On the count of three, I want each of you to loudly shout the name of your church.” We did but the response was not distinguishable, so many different churches. Then he said, “Now, on the count of three, I want all of you to loudly shout the name of your Savior.” On three…we all shouted, “JESUS!!!” The response was amazing! The name of Jesus was proclaimed all across the capital! What a difference it made when we all were “in one accord”.
It will make a difference when we, as the church, come together as one.
“Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!” (Psalm 133:1)
