“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (1 Corinthians 5:17)
Everyone has a past, some good and some bad. The enemy will constantly try to remind us of the bad things in our past to keep us from living in the new life God has given us. If we dwell on those bad memories, we’ll go deeper and deeper into where the devil wants us to go. DON’T GO THERE! Use the weapons God has given us in His Word to resist the devil. If we have been saved, all those past sins have been thrown into the depths of the sea to be remembered no more, (Micah 7:19). God doesn’t remember them but we can. DON’T.
I read a quote recently that said, “You are not defined by your sin. You are defined by your Savior.” How do we think of ourselves? The Bible tell of several who defeated their past: Rahab was a prostitute but she helped two Israelite spies and helped with the conquest of Jericho. She is in the lineage of Jesus. The disciple Thomas doubted Jesus had been raised from the dead. Peter denied Jesus three times. All three, and others, had a “past” but are now new creations. Thomas and Peter were “Christians” but they made mistakes. Can we identify? We each can have our own view of ourselves based on our past. But we have been made new! We have a new image that others can see. “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16). Let’s live our lives, shine Jesus and forget our past.
In my blog, Revelations From the Road, www.roadrevelations.org, I wrote a piece titled, “Praise Beside the Path”, which speaks of how the devil will keep reminding us of our past, https://roadrevelations.org/2010/09/praise-beside-the-path.
We all have a past and we all have a future. Where will we be in the future?
