I read about this in one of my devotions and thought it was good to share.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
God wants us to focus on doing what He tells us to do, not just hearing what He tells us to do.
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22). We can listen to sermons and study the Bible for years but if we never do anything about what we’ve heard or read, then we will never grow in faith.
The top scripture above points out four things about God’s Word.
One, It shows us the Path to walk on; that’s teaching.
Two, It shows us where we got off the Path; that’s rebuking.
Three, it shows us how to get back on the Path; that’s correcting.
Four, it shows us how to stay on the Path; that’s training in righteousness.
Where are we on the Path? Are we on the Path?
We know a lot more than we put into practice. A person may know a lot about the benefits of exercise and eating right but do they do it? We know about forgiveness but do we forgive someone who hurt us? We know about waiting on God but are we impatient? Jesus said in Matthew 28:20, “Teach them to do everything I have commanded you.” He didn’t say to teach them to know everything or to think about everything He commanded. No, He said teach them to DO IT!
So, let’s make plans to do something about what we hear and read. This also reminds me of the sports company, Nike’s iconic motto, “Just Do It”.
