God, Show Yourself

During my devotion and prayer time this morning, I asked God to show Himself to me; to manifest Himself in my midst so I could see His glory. I was immediately reminded of several people and situations in the Bible that gave me an answer to my query.

David saw the deliverence of God in his fight with Goliath but he had to get out of the trenches and run into battle first. (1 Samuel 17:48). Moses saw the power of God at the Red Sea but he had to lift his staff out over the water first. (Exodus 14:16). Noah and his family saw the deliverence of God but he had to build an ark first. (Genesis 6:22).

Joshua and his people saw the military might of God at Jericho but they had to march around the city thirteen times first. (Joshua 6:2-4). Peter saw a miracle of God but he had to step out of the boat first. (Matthew 14:29). You see, all these people and many more saw God’s glory but first THEY had to DO something! They had to take action first. Joseph had to endure almost fourteen years of “doing” before he saw God’s glory but he had successes along the way; he never gave up and continued serving God and God was with him. (Genesis 39:2)

The Bible says, “Be ye doers of the Word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22). If we want to see the glory of God in our lives, at least He told me, we’re going to have to get up off the couch and do something. I think He has already told us some things to do so if you’re waiting for a miracle in your situation, ask God what you’re supposed to do first. God’s To-Do List

Has God ever told you to do anything? You know, when you get that “feeling” you need to speak to or apologize to someone or the preacher’s sermon convicts you to do something. I have actually written some of my things down so I’ll be reminded every day. The Holy Spirit reminds me as well.

On this day, God gave me a revelation of just how important this is for me. During morning prayer, I was asking God for something, I think, like for more influence or power in an area of service. I was wanting a promotion to another level of Spiritual effectiveness. The Spirit responded with something like, “What about the things I’ve asked you to do?” It brought to my mind when a teenager asks his dad to borrow the car and dad says, “Have you cleaned your room yet? Have you taken out the trash? Do those things first, then you can have the car.” I think it’s the same with me and you and God.

God has a plan for each of us, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11. And, His plan involves some obedience and action on our part. I don’t think God will fully do what He’s got planned for us until we do what He’s asked us to do. What has God asked you to do? What things do you know in your heart you should be doing?

Maybe we’re satisfied with where we are in life. Maybe we don’t want a promotion in the Kingdom. But if we do, God wants to use us; to move us up in His Kingdom. But it’s like training for a desired position. We are tested at every level and must pass the test to move up. There are things we must do in order to be promoted. “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. James 1:22. Yes, we may have our to-do list but it’s not too important compared with God’s. His list for us comes with guarantees too. If God asks us to do something, He will give us what we need to be successful. “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31. So, what has God asked you to do? Go for it!

What’s Your Dream?

I’m on the Board of Deacons at my church and we had a deacon’s meeting on this evening. After the normal “business” of church administration, our pastor directed us to think about what our dreams were for our church. Our AG church, I think, is a progressive congregation focusing on Jesus and leaning toward the contemporary style of worship. Our pastor is a gifted leader and is not satisfied with, “church as usual” and, thus, our church is different than most in our area of Southwest Virginia. The early church was different too, wasn’t it?

As we talked about what we, as deacons, dreamed for our church, some things mentioned were, “500 for Saturday night prayer.”, “A place where miracles happen regularly.”, and “Hosting a youth conference with thousands in attendance.”. All these things sounded great and I know they can all come to pass. “All things are possible to him who believes. Mark 9:23.” So, what would God say about our dreams?

I got this vision, or revelation, as I frequently do, of me telling God my dreams for our church. As I told God one dream, He’d say, “OK, no problem.”. I’d tell Him another and He’d say, “I can do that.” With another, He’s say, “All these things are easy for me and I want to make your dreams realities but you’re not dreaming big enough! And, you know, your dreams depend on you too. Do you really believe I can and will do these things? Are you reading My Word and following My commands? Are you willing to sacrifice and pray to help make these dreams come to pass?”. I realized many of the things we ask God for, things we pray for, He is ready and willing to speak them into existanct but is waiting for us to do our part.

“Be ye doers of the Word and not hears only. James 1: 22“. This is so important. What’s your dream for your church, your family, your job, or your life. God is able, God is willing, and He could very well be waiting on you. Ask Him what you are to do. You probably already know.

I Will Heal Their Land

“…I will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

Does our land need healing? Can politicians and the government heal our land? Is the economy, the war, or health care really the issues? Who is responsible for this mess and who is responsible for cleaning it up? Does God want it cleaned up?

You may have heard of an “If-Then” statement. It says that IF a certain condition happens or is present THEN an expected outcome will occur. The THEN depends on the IF. “IF my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways,”. Are we God’s people? Yes, we are! Are we called by His Name? Yes we are! “God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful”. 1 Corinthians 1:9. We’re the ones!

To “humble ourselves” means to get off our high political horse, get on our knees, submit to God and pray. As we “pray”, we “seek His face”; and when we earnestly do that, He will show us what our “wicked ways” are. Then we must turn from our allegiance to a political party, a family tradition, or the influence of a slick TV ad and ask God what He would have us do.

“THEN will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” Brothers and sisters in Christ, it’s up to us; we are the responsible party. God is listening for and watching His people, ready to act on our behalf. If we, God’s people, will do what we’re called to do, the economy, threats from evil, our health, and everything else will be taken care of!

“If my people….I will”. He promised!

Unhook And Get Out

My wife and I spent the holiday weekend at Riverside Campground and RV Park, a Christian campground in Sevierville Tennesse. It’s a great facility with owners who declare “To God be the glory.”. We love to spend time there.

As I was praying this morning for several sick people on my list, I thought of the campground and how no ungodly behavior is allowed there. Sickness comes in and sets up camp in our bodies when it doesn’t have any right to. It just comes in, hooks up to the power and water, gets out the lounge chair and makes itself at home. It doesn’t even pay the lot rent!

But…as the franchise owner of the campground, (God is the main boss and the campground is our body), we can say, “Not in my campground! Unhook and get out! Your kind is not allowed here.” “And when Jesus saw that a multitude came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I command thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. And having cried out, and torn him much, he came out: Mark 9: 25-26“.

Now, it may take awhile for long term campers to pull up stakes and leave but we must stay after them. And they may try to come back later but if we stand on the authority of the boss, we can keep them out. “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. Luke 10:19“. Take your authority as park owners and kick the sickness, depression, confusion, poverty, and fear bums out!
