The Power Was There

“And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.” (Luke 5:17).

This is the story of the four guys who made a hole in the roof in order to get their buddy in to see Jesus. They believed Jesus could help their friend and the power was there to do it. Jesus was there. But the Pharisees and doctors of the law didn’t get anything that day because of their unbelief. The man on the mat got something from the power that was there. He and his friends had faith. He got healed.

Jesus was on his way to the house of Jairus to heal his daughter, (Mark 5), when a lady who had been suffering with a medical condition for years came up behind Jesus and touched His clothes. She believed if she could just touch him, she would be healed. The power to heal her was there and when she made contact with Him, in faith, that power flowed out of Jesus and into her. She was completely healed! The power was there. She received it.

Wherever Jesus is, there is power. Where is the Spirit of Jesus right now? Is He here? “But you are holy, you who inhabit the praises of your people.” (Psalm22:3). Have you praised God lately or are you getting ready to? “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever”. (Hebrews 13:8). Wherever the Spirit of Jesus is, there is power. He is with you if you’ve invited Him to be. He will never leave you. The power is here. Believe it. Receive it.

The Voice of God

A friend Chris spoke yesterday on this topic at a men’s prayer breakfast I attend and I thought I’d elaborate on it here.

God speaks to His people, do you hear Him? “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” (Isaiah 30:21). The Bible speaks of the, “still, small voice”, (1 Kings 19:12), that God spoke to His prophet Elijah in. Is it too noisy around you to hear it? “Then the Spirit said unto Phillip, go near and join thyself to this chariot.”, (Acts 8:29). Does God speak to us like that today? Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” So, are you hearing Him?

When I was a boy, my brother and I would spend a lot of time playing in the woods behind our house. But we knew where the line was where we could still hear our mother’s voice calling us and we tried not to go over that boundary and be out of her voice range. Do we sometimes get so far off the path with things of this world that we can’t hear God speaking to us? If His voice is still and small, shouldn’t we get in a quiet place and really listen? When Jesus is standing at the door and knocking, (Revelation 3:20), are we watching TV, playing video games, talking on the phone, or arguing and don’t hear Him? The Holy Spirit spoke to me on the way to work recently and said, “Turn off the CD and let’s just talk.” I did and it was great.

And what about knowing His voice? Can we distinguish God’s voice from the devil’s? “My sheep know my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”, (John 10:27). Are we hearing the deceptive voice of the devil and following it because we don’t know the difference? Are we spending enough time with and talking to Jesus to know His voice? Does God speak to you through His Word as you read it daily? Are you communicating with Him in this way?

I’ve asked a lot of questions here but I want us to think about hearing from God. He has things He wants to tell us but we have to tune in and listen. He’s probably gently calling you right now. Do you hear Him? Leave a comment please.

Listen To Him!

God is our Father and His Word says He is with us all the time, (Hebrews 13:5), and if someone hangs around you all the time, they’re going to talk to you. Don’t you think? Especially if they’re the smartest person ever and they have things you need to know. They’re going to want to help you and teach you things. But what if they talk and you don’t listen or are preoccupied with stuff around you and miss what they say? This happened to me recently and I’d like to tell you about it.

I had written an IP address, an Internet thing I needed to do something at work, on a yellow Post-it note and when I needed it, I couldn’t find it. I looked in my truck, in my office, in all my pockets but could’nt find it anywhere. I had made several trips back and forth to a building next to mine where I was setting up for a meeting and noticed a piece of trash on the parking lot. Something inside told me I should pick it up but in my haste to set up for the meeting I walked right over it twice. “Ah, let someone else get it, I’m in too much of a hurry now.”, I thought.

However the third time I made that walk back to my office, the Holy Spirit spoke strongly to me to be a responsible servant and pick up that yellow, visible piece of paper in order to “clean up” the parking lot. As I bent to pick it up, it hit me…the note I couldn’t find was yellow and square, post-it size just like this piece of trash. I picked it up, turned it over, and saw that it was the note I’d lost. The Holy Spirit had told me twice to pick up that trash because He knew what it was but I was “too busy, in too much of a hurry”.

How many time does the Lord whisper things to us we need to know or tells us, “Don’t go there!”, or some other conversational thing that we just ignore, half listen to, or don’t even hear? How much are we missing every day because of this? Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:” (John 10:27). He also said in Revelation 3:20 that He is standing at the door knocking and, “..if anyone hears My voice“, He will come in to them and eat with them. IF.

Think about this today. Have a conversation with Jesus like you would with another person. Ask Him questions and wait for an answer. When you get a “feeling” on the inside that you should do something, say “Thank you Lord, I will.” Or, if you get a red flag feeling to NOT do something, heed it. Be blessed!

Steps To Peace

I heard a verse of scripture this week that spelled out four steps to Peace that I wanted to share with you. Then just yesterday I read another verse that said almost the same thing and I thought it was a “revelation” that God really wanted me to share.

The first verse was Phillipians 4:6 from the New Living Translation, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” I love scripture that seems to spell things out in steps. Step 1 – Don’t worry! Worry shows fear and fear is the opposite of faith. Many times in the Bible we read; fret not, don’t worry, don’t be anxious, don’t let your heart be troubled, and many other ways of saying the same thing. Worry shows a lack of trust in God and His Word.

Step 2 – Pray. And not just about the big things but pray about everything. Nothing is too small for God to want to help you with. Pray at all times with all kinds of prayers, (Ephesians 6:18). Prayer is simply talking, and listening, to God.

Step 3 – Express your needs. Tell God what you need, what you want. Now, He will straighten you out on the difference in your wants and your needs. In the Lord’s Prayer Jesus said to say it like this, “Give us this day our daily bread,” (Matthew 6:11), give us what we need today. The more you talk to Him, the better you’ll understand what you need and what you just want. But if you are in line with His will, He will give you your wants too.

Step 4 – Thank Him. God knows what’s best for you so we must give Him thanks for His decisions. We must thank Him for what He’s done for us in the past, what He’s doing now, (whether we are aware of it or not), and what He has planned for our future. It’s a good plan you know, (Jeremiah 29:11). Always give thanks, (Ephesians 5:20).

So there you are: Don’t worry – Pray – Express your needs, and Thank God; four steps to peace. But I told you earlier I found another scripture that said almost the same thing. 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18 says, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” If you’re rejoicing, you’re not worrying, pray and give thanks. We say we want to know God’s will for us, well, there it is. Do these things and you will find peace and a whole lot more.

Are You Connected?

In the business world it’s usually good to be connected with others who can help you. You may have heard someone ask, “How did they get that job, appointment, or award?” And the answer might be, “Oh, they have connections.” Do you have connections? Who are you connected with?

In a company it’s good to be connected with the CEO; if you have a good relationship with them and have access to their office, you can prosper with the company. But if you are related to them, well that’s another story. If you’re in the family, you have different, better, personal benefits that others don’t have. It’s good to be connected by birth to those in control. I guess you know where I’m going with this.
C. H. Spurgeon said about God, “He is Himself the great central source and Originator of all power.” God IS the source of power and we would be wise to be connected to Him. Are we? Or are we getting our power from education, our job, sports, or other connections? Where are our cables connected? And what about family? Jesus said, “I am the vine, and you are the branches. If you stay joined (connected) to me, and I stay joined (connected) to you, then you will produce lots of fruit. But you cannot do anything without me. If you don’t stay joined (connected) to me, you will be thrown away. You will be like dry branches that are gathered up and burned in a fire. Stay joined (connected) to me and let my teachings become part of you. Then you can pray for whatever you want, and your prayer will be answered. When you become fruitful disciples of mine, my Father will be honored.” (John 15:5-8 CEV). Are we connected to the vine, (family)?
Think of it this way: you have one outdoor water spigot with 42 hoses connected. How much “power” are you going to get from each one? The water pressure is diminished by all the connections. Our lives are the same way. How many connections do we have and which ones are most important? “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God…(be connected to Him) and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33).
