I was in a quartet years ago and we sang a song, “I’m Yours Lord”, and the chorus went like this:
“I’m Yours Lord, everything I’ve got,
Everything I am, everything I’m not.
I’m Yours Lord, try me now and see
See if I can be completely Yours.”
These lyrics have come back to me several times recently during my alone time with the Lord and I feel He’s reminding me of the relationship He wants to have with me as well as wanting me to share it with my fellow believers. Romans 12:1 tells us: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God–this is your true and proper worship.” As we pray, we should say, “Lord, here I am. I offer myself to You today, every bit of me. Take me and use me according to Your will.” He really wants that.
Now, back to those lyrics. Everything I’ve got: We should not hold anything back as we offer ourselves to God, give Him everything. Everything I am: God knows everything we are, He made us. We know a lot about who we are and some of it we’re ashamed of. But God wants to change us, build us, teach us, and equip us for His purpose. That’s where, Everything I’m not, comes in. Again, God knows who we are and who He wants us to be and He knows what we are not. So, we give that to Him also to be upgraded. Now, here’s the part that might be troubling: Try me now and see if I can be COMPLETELY Yours. Yes, we want to be all that God planned for us to be but, here we are saying, “OK Lord, I’m giving myself to You and I want You to test me and try me to see if I pass the test at this level.” This may mean some kind of trial or test that will show if we’re trusting Him or if we need more training. Remember, Jesus was tested in the wilderness, (Matthew 4:1-11). Being a Christian is much more than getting saved. God’s plan for us is to take us to ever increasing levels, to go from “glory to glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18). If you want to be in the advanced class or on the first team, God will test you. “You shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.” (Deuteronomy 8:2). Hopefully, we won’t whine and cry so much that it takes 40 years for us to advance or be promoted. So, we raise our hands, look Heavenward and say, “I’m Yours Lord, do whatever.”
Next time we will look at some Bible examples of, “try me now and see”, and some present-day scenarios. Be blessed!
