I heard the song recently by TobyMac, “Get Back Up” and it started this scenario playing in my mind. The lyrics that got me were, “We lose our way, we get back up again. You may be knocked down, but not out forever. So, get up, get up.” As usual, I saw a believer on the Path of Life and the devil sticks his leg out from the bushes on the side of the path and trips them. They fall down. This has happened several times before, but they have always gotten back up. “For the righteous falls seven times and rises again,” (Proverbs 24:16). But this time, the devil says in a very convincing voice, “Hey, why don’t you just stay down. If you keep getting up, you’ll just get tripped up again and again. Stay down, it’ll be alright.” LIAR! It’s not God’s plan for us to stay down, give up, surrender, and be defeated. Actually, we are not defeated until we do surrender! We’ll get knocked down or tripped up on our journey many times, “In this world you will have trouble.” (John 16:33), that’s the devil’s plan, “to steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10), but we must get back up!
There’s something important to remember too; God is right there with us and He will help us up. “Though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.” (Psalm 37:24). Can you see God in this scene, holding His hand out to help the believer up? That’s us. That’s Him. And you know, the devil tried to take Jesus down many times. He used people, the Law, he even personally tempted Jesus in the wilderness, (Matthew 4:1-11), but Jesus never went down. But wait…Jesus did go down. He allowed himself to be knocked down, nailed to a cross, killed, and buried. But we know what happened…HE GOT BACK UP! And that event assured us that we can get back up!
So, we can endure what the devil throws at us, God is there with us, we can get back up and continue with Him on the Path. And one more thing; Jesus is going down again…from Heaven. He’s coming down to get His people, those of us who believe. So, while we wait: “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31). Get up.
Our enemy tries to convince us to “stay down”, “It’ll be alright.” “You don’t have to get back up.” LIES! I know some of you have been knocked down or tripped up on your journey. Start by praising God, lift your hands up and you will feel that strong Hand of God grabbing ahold of you and lifting you back up. Then He says, “Okay child, let’s keep going.” Get back up!
