When we’re out in public we see people. At the store, on the street, at the Post Office, at the ball game, at church, at school and all the other places we may see people. Some of these people we may know, and others are strangers. Some we know well, and others are only acquaintances. But think about it; the opinion we have of other people is based on several things: their past, what they do now, how they’re dressed, how they’ve treated us in the past, who their family is, their habits, their words, their skin color, where they live, what they believe and support, their education, whether they go to church, their behavior at a sporting event or any number of other ways we “see” people. With most people, we don’t really know who they are inside. We don’t know what their past has been or what they’re going through now. But God knows and the way WE treat others is known to Him also. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (John 13:34).
Now, turn things around…people “see” us too. When they meet us in public, on social media, or when others think of us, what image forms in their minds about us? Could it be based on some of those things mentioned above which affects their image of us? What do they “see”? We all have a past and we’ve all done things that would tarnish our image. “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God;” (Romans 3:23).
So, here’s the lesson in all this:
- Treat people the way Jesus treated those He came in contact with no matter what they’ve done, how they look or how they act. Love one another and don’t judge. “Judge not, that you be not judged.” (Matthew 7:1).
- Do the best you can to project the image of Jesus in your life so that’s what people will see. Even if they know your past, how you grew up or the mistakes you’ve made, they will, now, see Jesus in you. It may take awhile but constant, purposeful shining the light of righteousness will enhance your image. God will be pleased. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17). “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16). That’s what it’s all about, giving God the glory.
No matter what we’ve done in the past, if we’ve confessed our sin, repented and asked for forgiveness, God’s image of us is good. “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight, In love.” (Ephesians 1:4). One thing I pray every morning is this: “Lord today, may I be, true to the view You have of me.” Let’s be aware of Our Image.
