Fill ‘Er Up?

Some of you are old enough to remember when the place where you bought gasoline was called a service station. You got service there. They would pump your gas, clean your windshield, and check your oil if you wanted them to. The friendly attendant would come out when you pulled up to the pumps and ask, “Fill’er up sir?” And you’d say, “Sure” or “No, just $5.00 worth please.” Oh the days.

The Bible says, “..be filled with the Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:18), so we as Christ followers are supposed to be filled with the Spirit. And if something is filled, there’s no room for anything else, right? So think of your yesterday. What things did you fill yourself with? Did you watch TV, listen to music, read something, talk to someone, go to a sporting event, browse the Internet, participate in a hobby, go to the movies, read the Bible, pray, listen to Christian music or preaching, think about something? There are many things we can fill ourselves with; some good, some bad, and others neutral. The apostle Peter said in 1 Peter 2:11, “Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.” We are all in a battle with our own desires which want to fill us up and leave no room for the Holy Spirit. We need to be conscience of what we allow into our beings and be sure that we don’t purposely let anything bad in. And things don’t have to be bad to take the place of the Spirit.

We have an enemy who disguises himself as an angel of light, (2 Corinthians 11:14), and is looking for someone he can trick. He’s like that service station attendant who comes out in a white uniform, all friendly and offers to help you by saying, “Fill ‘er up?” But what he has to fill you up with is deadly! Don’t be fooled! When you turn on the TV, sit down at the computer, open a magazine, talk to someone, or sit in the bleachers at a ballgame, he’s right there saying, “Fill ‘er up?” “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8). Let’s pay more attention to what we allow to fill us. I’d appreciate your comments. Be blessed!

What If – There Was No Light?

We get our information and training in the things we do from many different sources. To be effective in what we do, we need to study, learn, practice, and perform in the areas we are called to operate in. Consider these things…

What if a soldier on the battlefield had to get out his training manual to see what to do in a situation? What if an emergency arises while driving and the driver has to get out their driver’s education textbook to see how to react? What if an athlete is about to run a play but has to look at the play diagram to see where he’s supposed to go and what he’s supposed to do? What if a person is confused in the dark and doesn’t know which way to turn and there’s no light to look up the answer in the Bible? What if a Christian has an important decision to make and needs to act quickly? While he researches the scriptures for an answer, the opportunity passes and is missed. What if a temptation presents itself and the Christian has to call the pastor to rebuke that spirit or pray for strength? What if someone asks you about Jesus and wants to get saved and you have to say, “Wait, let me see if my pastor can see you.” What if….?

• Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105).
• I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. (Psalm 119:11).
• Study to show yourself approved to God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15).
• Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; (Psalm 23:4).
• “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12).

God’s Word is the light in the darkness, the answer when we need it, the wisdom when we are unsure, the power and authority when we are confronted, the answer to a lost any dying world. – Read it, memorize it, get it into your spirit, and do what it says. We can’t depend on others or having to get out the physical Book to search for the answer. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. (James 1:22). What if we all knew God’s Word well enough to act according to it in every situation? What if…….?

Quick Point – Shadows Aren’t Real

Think about this: You have to have a light to cast a shadow and something has to be in front of the light to make the shadow. Shadows are deceptive. A little bitty bug could cast a frightening shadow, right? Jesus is the light, John 8:12, the shadows aren’t real. Some small thing could cast a big shadow, don’t be afraid of it. “Even though I walk through the valley of the SHADOW of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me;” Psalm 23:4. The devil is good at deception.

Cross Paths

In prayer this beautiful morning, I was praying for the lost and asked God to cause them to be in the presence of some “well lit” Christians today. The thinking being that they would notice the light and be drawn to it. But today, God gave me a different view of that concept.

I asked God to have those traveling the wide path, “For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.” Matthew 7:13, to cross paths with those on the path of righteousness, the narrow path, (verse 14). As the lost travel the wide path with othrs lik themselves, they won’t know there’s any difference. They may think that because there’s so many on this path, it’s the only or right way to go.

However, when they look up ahead and see the bright light path crossing their darkness, they may want to, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” Paslm 34:8. I pray that they’ll see the contrast between their dark road and our bright one and be drawn onto the narrow path. And how would they see this tomorrow? We who are traveling our bright path, following the will of God, will be shining as we cross paths with them. At work, at school, at the grocery store, on the sidewalk, in the neighborhood, wherever we go. “You are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:14.

Cross Paths

During morning prayer while praying for the lost on my list, I asked God to have them cross paths today with righteousness. I saw it this way: As they travel the wide road, Matthew 7:13, with many others like them, they won’t know there’s any difference. They think everyone is like them and they’re all going the right way. However, if they come upon a crossing road which is well lit and presents a great contrast to their darkness, they might reconsider the way they’re going. They will notice the people on this narrow path, Matthew 7:14, only a few of them, but they are very happy and peaceful. Maybe they’ll want to get off the dark road and, “Taste and see that the Lord is good,” Psalms 34:8, on the bright road.

As we travel the narrow road every day, people who are on the broad road are crossing our paths; they see us as they pass. My prayer is that they will see something in me that will make them want to change directions, (repent), and come join me. How about you?
