“Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.” (Exodus 20:20)
Moses said this to the Israelites after receiving the Ten Commandments. The people had seen Mount Sinai smoking, heard trumpets and felt an earthquake. They were afraid. God was giving them a list to live by and we still have that list.
I was walking around my property and saw several things I needed to do…my list. It made me think and pray, “God, what is on Your list for me?” And I wondered, would His list be numbered? I’d like to see His list of things to be accomplished by me starting with #1. Have you thought about what God’s list for you might look like? The Ten Commandments might be a good place to begin.
As a former teacher and coach, I know there are lists of things to be accomplished in school and in sports. And, as the verse above states, there will be some testing. Students and athletes must follow the list, and the rules, to move forward and be successful. You’re not going to graduate after completing the 9th grade list. And there will be tests. Then, there will be another list and more tests. A coach will have a list of things to be done by the players to progress in their sport. When I coached basketball, I’d make a list of things to do for each practice. That list changed as the players progressed. In the workplace, in order to move up, you have to follow the rules and check off the boss’ list. So let’s again think about God’s list for us. He has given each one of us gifts to use to make it through the “list”, “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.” (1 Peter 4:10) To serve one another. Our “list” will be based on our gifting and we are all commanded to “do”. God also gave us a general list in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” So, think about what your gifts are and do your best to use them. And…ask God to direct you according to His list. He’s the teacher and coach.
