Signs

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” (Isaiah 30:21).

A pop song from 1971 said: “Sign, sign, everywhere a sign. Blockin’ out the scenery, breakin’ my mind. Do this, don’t do that, can’t you read the sign?” This song came to me recently as I was driving home from the airport. Arrows in the parking lot, Stop/Yield signs, Do Not Enter, exit signs, traffic lights, food next exit, Caution, No Smoking, identification signs, do you get the picture? Sometimes you can get by with going against the arrow if the way is clear; you might go through a red light and not get caught, but you may be led astray by following or not following the sign. Signs are important and we should all pay attention to them. And if we don’t follow traffic signs, it could lead to an accident.

What about health signs? What about relational signs? What about financial signs? They’re there but do we follow them or even see them?  But most important of all, what about Spiritual signs? These are not usually posted for us to see with our eyes. They come from what we have learned from God’s Word and from talking with Him on a daily basis. These signs may come from a trusted family member or friend who might have experienced a wrong turn somewhere. These are signs that will be flashing, “Don’t Go There!”, “STOP!” “This is the Way.” “Don’t look!” Or it could be a “U-Turn” sign telling us we’re going the wrong way and need to turn around. This could be for an unsaved person or a Christian who has gotten off the Path.

Just as we pay attention to traffic and other physical signs, shouldn’t we pay just as much or more attention to God’s signs? They will all lead us in the right way and keep us safe. Watch and listen for His signs. Twenty-one times in the Bible, Jesus said, “Follow Me.” Great advice, good “sign”.
